Celebrating Community, One Recipe at a Time

Jempson’s is delighted to donate £250 towards the publication of Stone-cum-Ebony: A Village Recipe Book, a wonderful community project bringing together much-loved recipes, local memories and stories from village life. 📖🍰

The idea for the book began in October 2025 following the village’s annual Heaviest Pumpkin Competition, when someone asked for Sue Lowrie’s famous cheese scone recipe. After the recipe was shared on the village Facebook page, the idea quickly gathered momentum. With so many popular events taking place throughout the year, and plenty of talented local cooks behind them, a village recipe book seemed the perfect way to celebrate the food, people and occasions that bring the community together.

The new book follows in the footsteps of two previous village projects. In 2015, the Women’s Institute produced An Ordinary Year of Village Life, capturing everyday moments within the community. This was followed in 2020 by Our Village in Lockdown, which documented the village’s response to the Covid pandemic through its unusual, humorous and moving experiences.

Both publications have become important snapshots of local history, preserving memories of village life during very different times. It is hoped that Stone-cum-Ebony: A Village Recipe Book will create another lasting archive, this time told through the recipes, celebrations and shared moments that make the village such a special community.

As one of the book’s contributors, Maria, perfectly put it: “Happy things should be celebrated more.”
